Watch Comparison: New vs. Old Rolex Air King
This is one of mine, part stripped for restoration. Its from 3rd quarter 1958 and has a butterfly rotor. I think the 3-6-9 dial is quite unusual. _____
The movement type was denoted on the dial with the text Precision or no text for the 1520 and Super Precision for the 1530. Many dials were used during the long 37 year production run. Today, some are extremely rare, including the double red.
After the 5500s long and mostly unchanged 37 year run, the Air-King line was upgraded to a sapphire crystal and new cal 3000 movement. This new Air-King was rechristened with the reference number 14000. Refreshed versions of the 5500 dials carried on with new 3/6/9 Explorer style dials following shortly after. I'm thinking about getting an Air King 5500. For people that have owned watches with the 1520 movement, what are your thoughts on it? How was your experience with it?The reference 5500 Air-King measured 34mm in diameter, and uses Rolex’s classic Oyster case paired with an acrylic crystal. Without a date complication, GMT-hand, or even chronometer certification markings, the dial of the reference 5500 is one of the most simple and uncluttered designs that Rolex has ever put forward. The Rolex Air-King pays tribute to the pioneers of flight and the Oyster’s roles in the epic story of aviation. With its 40mm case in Oystersteel, solid-link Oyster bracelet with Oysterclasp, and distinctive black dial, the Air-King perpetuates the aeronautical heritage of .
If it said “Precision” it housed the 1520 movement; however, if the dial read “Super-precision” it used the more modern 1530. Being the entry-level Rolex, the Air-King was never “Superlative Chronometer Certified”. Interestingly, the 5500 was the first ever Rolex to feature an in-house movement. The black dial with large contrasting hour markers make the new Air-King face easy to read, and yellow and green accents on the Rolex insignia and seconds hand bear a striking resemblance to the cockpit instruments the Swiss horlogerie created for the Bloodhound SSC Project. The Oyster Perpetual Air-King is equipped with a self-winding mechanical movement entirely manufactured by Rolex. It features an Oyster bracelet with an Oysterlock safety clasp and the Easylink comfort extension link. The Air-King dial features a distinctive black dial with a combination of large 3, 6 and 9 numerals marking the hours and a prominent minute scale for navigational time readings. It bears the name Air-King in the same lettering that was designed specially for the model in the 1950s.

It seems a good bit bigger to me when I passed it in the left turn lane. Even though my 2013 Prius is 2 inches longer, the Canoo was wider and much taller. I quickly drew up a rough comparison based on overall dimensions and their side profile. Also threw in a pic of the car when I followed it.
